With so many products on our supermarket shelves we are often spoilt for choice when it comes to purchasing our food and cosmetic products. But how much do you really know about the makers of your favorite brands?

Most consumers are often not aware that the majority of supermarket products, from pet food to jeans, and everything in between are owned by ten major corporations.

This is what some have called “The Illusion of Choice”, where although products are branded separately, they belong to the same parent company as their competitors. For example, KFC and Taco Bell are different fast food chains but both are owned by ‘Yum Brands’.

Similarly, Proctor & Gamble (P&G) own a number of cosmetic brands, including Pantene, Head & Shoulders, Herbal Essence and Nice ‘n’ Easy – all are competing brands and all are from the same parent company.

So, next time you are at the supermarket and reach for your favorite brand you might want to find out to whom your money is really going to….

The 10 corporations are:
P&G
Coca Cola
Kraft
Nestle
Pepisco
Johnson & Johnson
Kellogg’s
Mars
Unilever
General Mills
