Anna Butcher is co-owner of booming Dubai-based company Ugly Duckling Photography.

My background..

I’m from England, but have lived in Dubai for nearly seven years. I have two boys, aged 6 and 4. I was previously working in a corporate environment, but I decided to have a career change a few years ago and pursue my passion for photography.

My business…

We set up Ugly Duckling Photography in March 2010. It’s a photography business that focuses on three areas – weddings, events, and families.

I set up the business with my partner Kelly – and we’ve since grown to a team of four females, plus freelancers. We now offer videography and album services too.

We have 900 followers on Facebook and 500 followers on Twitter. We get lots of enquiries every day through our website and we have wedding bookings in the diary nearly every weekend for the next six months.

Dubai has been a great place to set up our business. It’s predominately grown through word or mouth. I think our success is down to great service and passion for what we do.

Balancing work with motherhood..

I have two daughters; one at nursery and one at school. I have a very supportive husband, a very good helper, and fantastic friends – if I didn’t have them, it would be very difficult to juggle. I spend time on Facebook and Twitter in the evening to keep up with social marketing. I used to work for Magrudy’s part-time, but I’m now going to concentrate on Buckle Up In The Back on a full time basis.

I am looking for..
This position is filled.

We need to find a full-time editor to help us with all our shoots. You don’t need to be a graphic designer – just someone with a good eye and who is familiar with Adobe Lightroom.

We would also like to recruit a full-time videographer. We have three freelancers we use regularly, but we’d love to find someone that can work with us on a full-time basis. Those interested in these positions can email us atcontact@uglyduckling.com

My advice..

The key to success in business is having people around you that you can trust. I have a great team in place that can take control of things while I have a month off (in three weeks I am due to give birth to my third child).

Hiring an accountant was a turning point for Ugly Duckling. I would recommend any small business owner to have one!

I’m so fortunate to do something that I love.  No matter how busy we are and how many late nights we have (weddings regularly go on until 2 or 3am, which is difficult when you have early starts with the children) – but at the end of the day, I love taking pictures and always will. You have to love what you do when it’s your own business – if you don’t, in my opinion, its probably never going to be a success.
